Yes, the superstition is that eating black-eyed peas on New Year's Day will bring you good luck, but according to All-Recipes, you have to add a few sides to go with them in order for the luck to be maintained all year long.

"But the luck won't stick, according to many legends, if you don't eat them with greens (which symbolize money), cornbread (which symbolizes gold), and pork (which symbolizes luck, as pigs root forward)."

You can combine most of the ingredients for year-long luck by making Hopin John, but don't forget the side of cornbread.  Here is a recipe for Classic Hoppin John.  I would serve it with cornbread and some greens for the added good luck.

I had my first taste of black-eyed peas last year. They were made with dried beans and were really good. For New Year's, I will make some cornbread and serve a side of collard greens. Good luck is on its way.
Happy New Year, Everyone, and Happy Holidays!
