September 22nd marks National Elephant Appreciation Day, a special daily holiday dedicated to honoring these majestic creatures and raising awareness about the serious challenges they face in the wild. Elephants, the world’s largest land mammals, are threatened by poaching and habitat loss, making conservation efforts more important than ever. This day is a timely reminder to pause, celebrate, and support the protection of these beautiful animals that inspire awe and respect.

A Few Elephant Facts...

  • You can tell the three elephant species apart by their ears.
  • Their trunks have around 150,000 muscle units are are used for breathing, smelling, drinking, foraging, spraying water, and even for a snorkel when in the water.  It is also used in their social life for greeting, comforting and communicating. 
  • Elephants spend over 3/4 of their day eating. 
  • Elephants never forget because their temporal lobe, which is associated with memory, is very large and thick.

A Few Ways to Celebrate National Elephant Appreciation Day...

  1. Learn more about elephants by reading or watching a documentary.
  2. Go to a local zoo and visit the elephant exhibit. 
  3. Donate to a group that helps elephants.
  4. Support elephants at an elephant sanctuary by adopting an elephant.
