Let's Celebrate National Near Miss Day!
Celebrated Every March 23rd.
National Near Miss Day is a day to commemorate the near miss
between Earth and a giant asteroid in 1989.
A Few Near Miss Facts...
- In 1989, asteroid 4581 Asclepius came within 500,000 miles of Earth.
- Geophysicists estimate the collision would have been catastrophic.
- Today, we have people watching the sky to track asteroids near Earth.
- Scientists estimate thousands of meteorites hit the earth yearly, but most go unnoticed.
- A meteor is a small piece of an asteroid.
A Few Ways to Celebrate National Near Miss Day...
1-Share stories of near misses in your life (I was "nearly" hit by a log truck in the 1980s).
2-Learn about asteroids.
3-Go to a space-related museum and learn about space and, of course, asteroids.
4-Watch videos about asteroids and meteors.
How will I celebrate National Near Miss Day? I will learn more about asteroids because I know very little about space.
