California Western Monarch Day is a day to celebrate the migration of the Western Monarch Butterfly.

A Few Western Monarch Butterfly Facts...
  • This holiday was established in 2004.
  • They migrate to California's central coast from October to March.
  • The largest colony of butterflies in North America migrates to Pismo Beach in California.
  • A eucalyptus tree at Pismo Beach has been known to hold 20,000 butterflies regularly during the migration.
  • Western Monarchs live west of the Rockies and migrate south for warmer weather.
  • During the migration, they may travel 1,000 miles.
  • The monarchs that live in warmer climates, such as the Caribbean, do not migrate.
  • Adult butterflies live only a few weeks.

2-Go to California to see the Western Monarch Butterfly.
3-Plant the foods that the Monarchs love...Milkweed or nectar-rich flowers.
4-Visit a Butterfly House. 


How will I celebrate Western Monarch Butterfly Day? I will go to a local Butterfly house and take photos. I will also watch a documentary on butterflies.
