California Western Monarch Day is a day to celebrate the migration of the Western Monarch Butterfly.
A Few Western Monarch Butterfly Facts...
- This holiday was established in 2004.
- They migrate to California's central coast from October to March.
- The largest colony of butterflies in North America migrates to Pismo Beach in California.
- A eucalyptus tree at Pismo Beach has been known to hold 20,000 butterflies regularly during the migration.
- Western Monarchs live west of the Rockies and migrate south for warmer weather.
- During the migration, they may travel 1,000 miles.
- The monarchs that live in warmer climates, such as the Caribbean, do not migrate.
- Adult butterflies live only a few weeks.
